INTRODUCTION: Here's a new 24-mission tour of duty for X-Wing fans.
STORY: You get a lot of briefing text in this TOD because there's a story thread to the sequence of missions, just as there should be in any true X-Wing experience.
MISSIONS (If you don't want to learn the storyline upfront, skip this section):
Op 1: X-Wing - Assisting a B-Wing unit, wipe out CRVs and FRTs leaving a repair base. These B-Wings are the new model fresh off the assembly line and we must test their effectiveness.
Op 2: X-Wing - Alliance freighters stop off for repairs only to find an Imperial hunter-killer group on site. Jump the Imperials and give the freighter and repair teams time to get away safely.
Op 3: A-Wing - The hunter-killer group has found our second FRT repair depot. Protect our ships!
Op 4: B-Wing - Attack and destroy the hunter-killer group and its relief force.
Op 5: B-Wing - Newly outfitted CRVs must be destroyed before they can be deployed against us. We must win time to fully develop our B-Wing fleets.
Op 6: Y-Wing - Escort the delivery of parts to our B-Wing assembly station. The earlier attack on our FRT repair depot left us critically short of servicable FRTs. Protect them all!
Op 7: X-Wing - Our preparations are complete. Escort B-Wing assault on planetary defense force near Empire homeworld. This is a diversion for another planetary assault far away from the homeworld.
Op 8: A-Wing - Buy time for primary assault force to rendezvous with torpedo freighter. We are preparing to take over a planet on the edge of the Empire's sphere of influence.
Op 9: A-Wing - Planetary TIE reserves are deployed against our task force. Destroy them.
Op 10: B-Wing - Press advantage against planet defense ring: Destroy reserve CRVs, FRTs and a FRG. Beat relief forces.
Op 11: B-Wing - Buy time for retreat after our victory in the planetary battle. The Empire is pouncing and we must take our profit and run. We looted the planet and have massive reserves of supplies, weapons and other implements now.
Op 12: B-Wing - Hold out against attackers who have jumped one of our mine-protected service outposts. Wait for relief forces.
Op 13: B-Wing - Capture an Imperial command shuttle to learn the details of the Empire's vicious assault on our hospital fleet. You arrive too late to help save the fleet.
Op 14: A-Wing - Escort B-Wing attack on flagship that ordered destruction of hospital fleet.
Op 15: X-Wing - Cover flank of retreating assault force.
Op 16: B-Wing - Provide cover for summit meeting between our diplomats and leaders of the H'Nassa. Now that our new B-Wings are deployed in full throughout our fleets, we are selling off the older models to sympathetic races. The first deal, with the H'Nassa, will see us receiving foodstuffs and technology that will help us against the Empire.
Op 17: A-Wing - Attack waypoint where Z'Nassa pirates have captured one of the recently sold B-Wings. Teach the pirates a lesson and do another favor for the H'Nassa.
Op 18: B-Wing - Team with H'Nassa in a strike against Imperial aggressors in H'Nassa sector. H'Nassa aren't much help, but we'll mop up the Imperials anyway.
Op 19: A-Wing - Incredibly, the H'Nassa have now decided to ally themselves with the Empire. We wonder if they led us along to get their hands on some B-Wings. They are attacking our research station that we established to check out their new technology. You hyper in to save the station.
Op 20: B-Wing - We must stop the H'Nassa from turning over our fighter research secrets to the Empire. Attack their convoy en route to Imperial space.
Op 21: B-Wing - Intelligence gained from captured H'Nassa freighters indicates the H'Nassan high council may be under the Emperor's elite mind control spies. We will disable a CRV ferrying the H'Nassan leadership to the Imperial throne world.
Op 22: B-Wing - You'e out of torps and still on station. Defend the CRV until it can escape the sector.
Op 23: B-Wing - Now we must destroy our own B-Wings, which have fallen into the Empire's command. Clear the escorts first.
Op 24: B-Wing - The crowning effort: Recover our stolen technology and capture the STD Apocalypse. Victory to the Rebel Alliance!
HOW TO RUN IT: If you have the disk version of X-Wing: MAKE BACKUP COPIES OF THE GAME'S ORIGINAL TOUR I BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING ELSE! Then move the xwi and brf files from this game into your X-Wing directory to replace them. If you have the CD version of X-Wing: Download the XCD program from the Internet. It's a great little utility that allows you to run homemade missions on the X-Wing CD. After installing XCD according to its creator's specifications, install a MISSION directory on your root drive, then move all the B-Wing Attack TOD xwi and brf files into that directory. Then run the game according to the instructions under the XCD program. These 24 Tour V missions can be played in Tour V or in the Historical Missions area.
TECHNICAL: The B-Wing Attack TOD was created on a 486-66. Some slowdown occurs during certain situations in missions with a lot of capital ships, but otherwise it runs great. We would imagine 386s would have few problems, and Pentium users have no worries at all.
DIFFICULTY: Few pieces of cake in this TOD, but all missions are beatable with perseverance. There are two missions that call for a lot of endurance -- Missions 7 and 23. If you like 30-minute missions, you'll like them. But if you like nothing more than shoot-em-ups, consider yourself forewarned.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS: This TOD of course would not be possible without LucasArts' great game, X-Wing. The author of this TOD makes no claim infringing upon LucasArts' well-established rights with this program. The authors also greatly appreciate the XMB mission builder program by Neal Westfall. His rights also are fully recognized.
